The Kentucky coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioicus), also known as American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogany, nicker tree, and stump tree, [4] is a tree in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae of the legume family Fabaceae, native to the Midwest, Upper South, Appalachia, and small pockets of New York in the United States and Ontario in Canada.
Gymnocladus species are very large, deciduous trees with bipinnate leaves. The greenish-white flowers only appear after long periods of warm weather. Very long legumes are formed that hang from the branches. The species of this genus are predominantly distributed endochorically.

This is because the Kentucky Coffeetree sheds its leaves early during the late spring and therefore appears bare for up to 6 months.
