The Shrine of Christ the King, formerly known as St. Clara and St. Gelasius Church, is a historic Catholic church of the Archdiocese of Chicago in the Woodlawn neighborhood. It is now the National Headquarters of the American Province of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest , who are restoring the church after a 2015 fire.
Christ the King Parish was established in the Diocese of Covington on July 22, 1945. [1] [2] Initially, Mass and other parish functions were held in the chapel at St. Catherine's Academy. The Rev. George J. O'Brien was named the parish's first pastor but had to resign soon after because of ill health, being replaced by the Rev. Richard O'Neill.

In 1967 a congregation was organized and ground broken for the Cathedral of Christ the King. The Cathedral was completed in two years, at a cost of $1,653,729.81 (equivalent to $10.5 million in 2023), [1] though the building was not consecrated as a cathedral until 1977.
