A common design is a small cable or device that lies flat on a floor and relies on the electrical conductivity of water to decrease the resistance across two contacts.
A Water in Fuel Sensor, or WiF sensor, indicates the presence of water in fuel. It is installed in a fuel filter. When the water level in the water separator reaches the warning level, the WiF sends an electrical signal to the ECU or to dashboard (lamp). [1] The WiF is often used in common rail engines to avoid fuel injector damage.
