May 26, 2010. #31. From wikipedia: In many parts of the world, including parts of Europe, Canada, Australia, and Russia, [citation needed] number sign refers instead to the "numero" sign № (Unicode code point U+2116), which is often written simply as No. W.
When the user executes this shortcut on the on-screen alphabet keyboard, a keyboard that only has numbers and symbols on it will appear on the screen. In my written instructions, I have referred to this on-screen keyboard that has the numbers and symbols on it as the "number and symbols keyboard". Here’s the instruction I wrote:
Generally speaking, footnote symbols (asterisk, dagger, double-dagger, section mark, etc) are used to mark footnoted comments and are used in that order. Footnotes should be defined somewhere on the page or spread. Superscripted numbers designate references, which are usually expanded on a Reference Page at the end of a piece.
In Section 5.3.3. of The International System of Units (SI), the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) states "The numerical value always precedes the unit, and a space is always used to separate the unit from the number. … The only exceptions to this rule are for the unit symbols for degree, minute, and second for plane angle."

No one would say that the digit or numeral is big. "Figure" can be any number. "Digit" would have to be one of the individual symbols used in writing a number, and "numeral" would be either one of the symbols or the set of symbols used to represent a number. A symbol or set of symbols would not be called "big". Cross posted.

This is an excellent answer, and offers a helpful suggestion with regard to usage. However, per the answer itself, there should be a space following the less than sign that precedes the first occurrence of the number 10, i.e., not <10 g, but rather < 10 g. Last edited by a moderator: Apr 18, 2014.
Apr 8, 2009. #2. In English, the currency symbol is always placed before the number: $200. €19. In many other European languages, however, it's placed after the number. In other words, the placement depends on the language rather than on the currency. Last edited: Apr 8, 2009.
Although there is (lamentably) no universally acknowledged symbol for ''opposite'' in the mathematical language (as is commonly the case in math*), there is a symbol for opposite in accordance to some: the minus sign; ''-''. The Thing, is equal to the opposite opposite of The Thing: x=- (-x) [or, as in logic gates (computer tech): AND=- (NAND)]
