Presque Isle County (/ ˈprɛskiːl / PRESK-eel) is a county in the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,982. [2] The county seat is Rogers City. [3] The county was authorized by state legislative action on April 1, 1840, [4] but the county government was not established until 1871.
Communities. Presque Isle is a small unincorporated community located within Presque Isle Township along Lake Huron. It is approximately 15 miles north of Alpena, and 15 miles south of Rogers City. The community and the township are named for Presque Isle (literally, "almost an island") which is French for "peninsula".
The Old Presque Isle Light was the first lighthouse in the Presque Isle, Michigan area. The light was built in 1840, and was constructed of two-thirds stone and one-third brick. However, the tower and dwelling did not last long in the harsh weather, however, and by 1867 they were deteriorated enough for Congress to find need for a newer station.
