After College Mall opened on the east side of Bloomington in 1965, business gradually began to move away from downtown Bloomington to the mall or nearby areas. In 1972, Block's opened its second Bloomington store in College Mall in the space currently occupied (in 2013) by Abercrombie & Fitch , Christopher & Banks , and five other stores.
The first segment of the mall itself, which was an L-shaped section between Sears and Maas Brothers, opened on September 28, 1977. [5] In 1985, the mall underwent its first major expansion, which included additional mall space and two additional anchors on the east side. The first new anchor was JCPenney, which opened on February 6, 1985. [6]
The Lazarus store was later closed in April 2003 by its new parent Macy's as a part of a nationwide cost-cutting measure [28] [29] [30] and the site was left vacant for nearly two years before it was razed and a T.G.I. Friday's was built at the location in November 2005 [31] [32] but without a connection to the interior of the mall. T.G.I. Friday's closed in November 2015. [33]

Eastland Mall opened on February 16, 1967, anchored by JCPenney and Sears, both of which had moved from downtown Bloomington. [1] The mall was built on the east side of town, at the southwestern corner of East Empire Street (Illinois Route 9) and Veterans Parkway (formerly U.S. Route 66, now Interstate 55 Business Loop). Montgomery Ward, a Chicago-based department store, announced that they would be opening up a location at Southtown, and became the mall's only anchor; Ward filled a 188,050 square feet (17,000 m 2) building, the largest Ward department store in the United States. [5] The center's former movie theater.
The mall's first stage, comprising a Carson Pirie Scott department store and other mall shops, opened on August 14, 1980, followed by a Montgomery Ward anchor on September 25. [1] Two years later in 1982, Target was added as a third anchor. MetLife bought the mall in 1986 for $21 million. In 1988, Carson Pirie Scott sold its store to Von Maur.
