Big Bog State Recreation Area, a recent addition to the Minnesota state park system, is located on Minnesota State Highway 72, north of Waskish, Minnesota. It covers 9,459 acres (38.3 km 2 ), primarily swamps, bogs, and upland "islands".
The state also would give away the lake's only other public boat launch, located along state Hwy. 72 next to Big Bog. (Several private resorts also provide lake access to boaters and swimmers.)
State Highway 72 serves as a north–south route between the communities of Blackduck, Shooks, Kelliher, and Baudette. The roadway passes through the Red Lake State Forest in northeast Beltrami County between Kelliher and Waskish. Big Bog State Recreation Area is located on Highway 72, immediately north of Waskish.
Bemidji is near Chippewa National Forest, Itasca State Park, Lake Bemidji State Park, Big Bog State Recreation Area, and state forest areas. There are 400 lakes within 25 miles (40 km), 500 mi (800 km) of snowmobile trails and 99 mi (160 km) of cross-country ski trails.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 72.0 square miles (186.5 km 2), of which 65.0 square miles (168.4 km 2) is land and 7.0 square miles (18.1 km 2) (9.69%) is water. Nearby is the Big Bog State Recreation Area and Upper Red Lake.
