The Monticello Post Office is a historic post office building at 211 West Gaines Street in Monticello, Arkansas.The single-story brick Art Deco building was built in 1937. In 1941 a terra cotta sculpture by Berta Margoulies entitled Tomato Sculpture was installed in the building, which was funded in part by the Section of Painting and Sculpture of the United States Department of the Treasury.
Modern two-letter abbreviated codes for the states and territories originated in October 1963, with the issuance of Publication 59: Abbreviations for Use with ZIP Code, three months after the Post Office introduced ZIP codes in July 1963.
Several United States post offices are individually notable and have operated under the authority of the United States Post Office Department (1792–1971) or the United States Postal Service (since 1971).
It may have been built as early as 1820, and is a one-story, frame, weatherboarded, T-shaped building. The front façade features an undercut gallery with a pedimented gable supported by octagonal wooden columns. The building was used as a store and post office after the American Civil War until the mid-1960s. [2] [3]
