It was an annual event from 1795 until 1801, then was held every two years. It usually opened in September or October, and as the number of paintings grew, it occupied both the Salon carré and the Gallery of Apollo. In 1800, 651 paintings were shown; in 1812, 1,353 paintings were on display.
