Tiziano Vecellio (Italian: [titˈtsjaːno veˈtʃɛlljo]; c. 1488/90 [1] – 27 August 1576), [2] Latinized as Titianus, hence known in English as Titian (/ ˈ t ɪ ʃ ən / ⓘ TISH-ən), was an Italian Renaissance painter, [a] the most important artist of Renaissance Venetian painting. The Crowning with Thorns is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) done during 1542 and 1543. It is housed in the Musée du Louvre , in Paris . The painting was commissioned by the confraternity of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan .

In 1678 Carlo Ridolfi saw a work on a similar subject in Paolo del Sera's collection, possibly the work now in the Galleria Palatina. The latter is first definitively recorded in 1654, when it was acquired as a Giorgione work by cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici, whose collections later merged with that of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
