The taper rate for all NPT threads is 1 inch of diameter in 16 inches of length (3 ⁄ 4 inch per foot or 62.5 millimeters per meter) measured by the change of diameter (of the pipe thread) over distance of thread.
JIC fitting systems have three components that make a tubing assembly: fitting, flare nut, and sleeve. As with other flared connection systems, the seal is achieved through metal-to-metal contact between the finished surface of the fitting nose and the inside diameter of the flared tubing.
For example, AN6 bolt has a 3 ⁄ 8-24 thread [3] whereas an -6 AN fitting has a 9 ⁄ 16-18 thread. [ 4 ] Originally parts were made compliant to the specification MIL-F-5509, but they are now controlled under SAE AS (Aerospace Standards) specifications AS4841 through AS4843 and AS4875.
Piping or tubing is usually inserted into fittings to make connections. Connectors are assigned a gender, abbreviated M or F. An example of this is a "3 ⁄ 4-inch female adapter NPT", which would have a corresponding male connection of the same size and thread standard (in this case also NPT).
Does anyone have a good source on how to install NPT fittings? Evand 19:21, 8 February 2006 (UTC) The key standard is ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 "Pipe Threads, General Purpose (Inch)". Table 2 of that reference calls for 3 threads of make-up from hand-tight for pipes 2" and under (nominal), and 2 threads for pipes with nominal sizes over 2 inches.
