Mayo was born on December 30, 1937, in Orange, New Jersey to Noel and Blanche Mayo. As a child, he moved around a lot until middle school where he attended a boarding school in Cheney, Pennsylvania called Sunnycrest Farm for Negro Boys. [1] In high school, he worked at an art store. The store owner allowed Mayo to borrow any art books he wanted.

Millersburg is a village and the county seat of Holmes County, Ohio, United States. [8] Located 66 miles (106 km) south of Cleveland, it is in the heart of Ohio's Amish Country and is part of a large regional tourism industry. [9] The population was 3,151 at the 2020 census.
