Yes, a virtual IC card (e.g. Suica, Pasmo, etc.) should work in all places the physical one does. Japan uses multiple contactless technologies, so don’t ask for contactless but rather you need to be more specific and ask to pay with a credit card. Then you can use a credit card via Apple Pay if the payment terminal has NFC.
Many (even large/chain) stores do not accept credit card tap payment, requiring a physical card. This is fine — I wanted the card for 0% foreign transaction fee, HOWEVER: 4 times out of 5 during the past week the physical Apple Card has been rejected at the store’s credit card processing device.
Always carry yen in Japan. Lots of places are still cash only. You can also get a Suica card through Apple Wallet. Not only is it a transit card, but it works like a stored cash card that you can refill with your Apple Card. Have fun!
Spouse and I are paying with PASMO on iPhone for every single purchase possible and re-charging the Pasmo in Apple wallet w/ foreign travel credit card. To our credit card it looks like a travel category purchase (3% cash back) even though it’s at the pharmacy, groceries, liquor store, even auto repair.

A working Apple device An email address (That presumably does not already have an Apple ID associated with it) A phone number (It can already be used by another Apple ID) A Japanese address (I went on Google Maps to find a building in Numazu.) A few gigabytes of free storage First, head to the Apple ID website. I used my computer for this, but ...
tl;dr: Updated from iOS 17.1 to 17.2 and was able to add a Suica card to my Apple Wallet using a Visa credit card issued by Chase in the US when it would previously fail. Still could not add Pasmo. Like many people posting looking for help, I only have US Visa credit cards and was unable to add a Suica or Pasmo to my Apple Wallet due to the ...
