Although de jure the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of expression , [ 1 ] de facto there are various restrictions on content, with an official view towards "maintaining communal and religious harmony", given the history of communal tension in the nation.

Censorship in South Asia can apply to books, movies, the Internet and other media. Censorship occurs on religious, moral and political grounds, which is controversial in itself as the latter especially is seen as contrary to the tenets of democracy , in terms of freedom of speech and the right to freely criticise the government .
Book censorship in India has existed at least since the British period, and several books remain banned by the central and state governments. Books criticizing major religions of India, as well as books supposedly portraying national figures including Gandhi and Nehru in a bad light continue to remain banned.
