"God Is Working His Purpose Out" is an English Christian hymn. It was written in 1894 by Arthur Campbell Ainger as a tribute to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Edward White Benson. [1] The original music for the hymn was written at the same time by Millicent D. Kingham but a number of other pieces of music have been used for the hymn in recent times.
Musically, "God Is" is a gospel song, standing among the more traditional work on Jesus Is King. [8] [9] The song features a looped, sped-up soul sample of Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir's "God Is", [9] [10] [11] which begins from the intro. [5] [12] It also features cinematic sounds and a choral sweep.

The song's lyrics were inspired by the question "Why does God look our way?", which the band's lead singer Bart Millard's pastor used to ask to his congregation. The chorus of the song literally quotes a melody part (namely, the vocal break) from "Jefferson", a Roxette song from their Room Service album (2001). [1] The writer of "Jefferson", Per Gessle, made an arrangement with Groove Coverage to receive a rumoured 50% of royalties from the song, [2] [3] though Gessle said that figure was "far from the truth."
