The Journal of the Ancient Near Eastern Society (JANES) is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal. It was established in 1968 as The Journal of the Ancient Near Eastern Society of Columbia University, and since 1980 it has been housed at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Ancient Society is an 1877 book by the American anthropologist Lewis H. Morgan. Building on the data about kinship and social organization presented in his 1871 Systems of Consanguinity and Affinity of the Human Family , Morgan develops his theory of the three stages of human progress, i.e., from Savagery through Barbarism to Civilization .
The journal was established in 1884 by William Rainey Harper as Hebraica. In 1895 it was renamed the American Journal of Semitic Languages and Literatures, obtaining its current name in 1942. Originally published quarterly, it has been biannual since 2010, but at significantly expanded length and new format.
