Gross was born in Chicago, the son of Virginia Ruth Gross, a telephone operator, and William Oscar Gross, a tool designer. [1] Gross and his younger sister, Mary, were raised Catholic. He attended St. Francis Xavier [2] and St. Genevieve [3] schools in Chicago in his early years, graduating from the latter in 1961.
In 1974, he earned a Master of Counseling Psychology degree from Loyola University Chicago [4] and was moved to St. Genevieve Parish in Chicago. [4] In 1975, Rassas was appointed director of the Catholic Family Consultation Service, serving there until 1984. He also became associate moderator of the archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. [4]

The present church was designed by Francis Xavier Weiss, a legendary pastor who served the parish of Ste. Genevieve from 1865 until 1900, [1] and was built in a Gothic Revival style. In 1911, the church was enlarged with the rear wall removed and a hexagonal apse and two small transepts erected.
He studied for a master's degree in health pastoral care and took courses in theology at Loyola University Chicago. He also worked at St. Genevieve Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago. [3] Returning to his home diocese of Cuddapah, he was director of the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging from 2004 to 2008.
