It is the oldest and largest industrial facility that belongs to the U.S. Navy as well as the most comprehensive.
Located in Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia, it was put into service in 1834, and has been in service since then. They were built about 1837, and are three Greek Revival style brick dwellings. Quarters A is the most formal and sits on a high basement and covered by a hipped roof with interior end chimneys.
