The city of Grand Rapids was incorporated April 2, 1850. [22] It was officially established on May 2, 1850, when the village of Grand Rapids voted to accept the proposed city charter. The population at the time was 2,686. By 1857, the city of Grand Rapids' area totaled 10.5 square miles (27 km 2). [18]
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.76 square miles (92.62 km 2), of which 35.70 square miles (92.46 km 2) is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 km 2) (0.17%) is water. [7] The township is about 13 miles (21 km) south of downtown Grand Rapids. It is directly south of the city of Kentwood.
By the 1870s, the city of Grand Rapids realized the need for a city-wide water system. Bonds were issued in 1874, and a reservoir constructed. However, by the 1900s, there was increasing pressure to find a new source of clean water for the city. In 1910 bonds were issued to construct a filtration plant to clean water from the Grand River.
The city of Lowell is bordered on the north, but the two are administered autonomously. The township is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is located about 15 miles (24.1 km) east of the city of Grand Rapids .
