On January 1, 1971, the City of Stockholm became part of Stockholm Municipality due to a municipal reform in Sweden.

Stockholm County was established in 1714. The City of Stockholm then constituted its own administrative entity under the Governor of Stockholm and was not part of Stockholm County.
