    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-way_string-matching...

In computer science, the two-way string-matching algorithm is a string-searching algorithm, discovered by Maxime Crochemore and Dominique Perrin in 1991. [1] It takes a pattern of size m, called a “needle”, preprocesses it in linear time O(m), producing information that can then be used to search for the needle in any “haystack” string, taking only linear time O(n) with n being the ...

Occasionally, the team, usually Savage and Hyneman, holds a friendly competition between themselves to see which of them can devise a more successful solution to recreating the results. For instance a 32 byte needle ending in "z" searching through a 255 byte haystack which does not have a 'z' byte in it would take up to 224 byte comparisons. The best case is the same as for the Boyer–Moore string-search algorithm in big O notation, although the constant overhead of initialization and for each loop is less.

I just wanted to point that this idiom is not unique to English. I live in Israel and in Modern Hebrew there is the idiom מחט בערמת שחת (Read: Mahat Be'Aremat Shahat) which literally means needle in a haystack and also has the same meaning. NegativeIQ 06:31, 23 March 2008 (UTC) literally the same idiom is used in dutch too.
