In 2002, Dunbar beat Lafayette early in the season at Bryan Station tournament of bands and also defeated them in the state preliminary competition but once again, Lafayette surpassed PLD in finals by a tenth of a point and claimed the Governor's cup trophy. 2002 finals had taken place in Lexington's commonwealth stadium for a consecutive year.
