In the United Kingdom, a driving licence is the official document which authorises its holder to operate motor vehicles on highways and other public roads. It is administered in England, Scotland and Wales by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and in Northern Ireland by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA).
The DVLA is an executive agency of the Department for Transport. The current Chief Executive of the agency is Julie (Karen) Lennard. The DVA is responsible for driver licensing in Northern Ireland, as this is a devolved matter, and issues both provisional and full driving licences. A valid provisional driving licence, passed FTT and a photo ID must be presented to be allowed to take the practical test. Expired PDL are not accepted and taking the practical tests will be rejected.
UK driving licences may be endorsed by order of the courts if the driver has been convicted of an offence concerned with driving or operating a vehicle. [1] An endorsement may also be accompanied by a number of points which can remain on the licence for up to 11 years. [ 2 ]
Holders of a provisional licence must be supervised by someone who is over 21 and has held their full licence for over 3 years. Provisional licence holders in Northern Ireland must not exceed 45 mph. When a learner is driving a car, they must display a red 'L' plate on the front and rear of the vehicle (or a 'D' plate in Wales).
Driving licences in Singapore are issued by the traffic police. The minimum age to obtain a provisional driving licence (PDL), which allows the holder to practice driving while under the supervision of an authorised driving instructor, is 18. A provisional driving licence is obtained once the individual has passed the basic theory test.
