The Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) was established in 1988 as a National Vocational Training Centre (NVTC). Over time, it evolved into a Technical College offering courses in automotive, electrical, and mechanical engineering, producing artisans capable of operating and maintaining machinery in industry with little or no research or generation of new technology related knowledge.
Harare Polytechnic's goal is to be one of the regions leading hubs of intellectual excellence in scientific, technical, vocational engineering, and technological education in preparing students for the growing knowledge economy. The school initially boomed in post independence Zimbabwe with a growth in students and funding.
By 1 October 1991, there were 270 students, 28 academic staff, 41 administrators, and 11 support staff. On 28 October 1991, the university organized a public ceremony to install its first Chancellor Cde R. G. Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe and its first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Phinias Makhurane, and to lay the institution's foundation stone.

In 1945, Manfred Hodson (after whom a residence hall is now named) formed the Rhodesia University Association, inspired by the promise of £20,000 by Robert Jeffrey Freeman for establishing such a university. The institution was established in 1984 and was known as Umtali Technical College when it was formed. At its inception, the college operated as a satellite affiliate for Harare Polytechnic formerly Salisbury Technical College operating with just two divisions of Commerce and Engineering, right now the institution has six divisions with student enrolment of about 200 a year.
[2] [3] Student enrollment at ZOU has been growing steadily from the time of its formation and in terms of enrollment it is the largest university in Zimbabwe. [2] The Zimbabwe Open University has seven faculties under which the academic programmes are conducted. ZOU is in the process of building it’s flagship campus at Hatcliffe.
Student events such as the ColourFest are held at the school and they always attract a sizable crowd. There is free WiFi around campus. Concerts are also hosted at the school or at the bars near the school where students mingle.
