"Lovely Day" is a song by American soul and R&B singer Bill Withers. Written by Withers and Skip Scarborough , it was released on December 21, 1977, and appears on Withers's sixth album, Menagerie (1977).
His song "This is My Lovely Day" also appeared in the John Cleese comedy Clockwise in 1987. Ellis's composition "Alpine Pastures" was used as the theme song for the long-running BBC radio series My Word. Another light music composition, Coronation Scot, was the signature tune for the series Paul Temple.
A 2:54 shorter edit (omitting not only the opening free-form piano solo but also the subsequent varying-time-signature horn/piano dialog—therefore starting at the trumpet solo which begins the main movement—and without the spoken part) was included on the original vinyl version of Chicago's Greatest Hits, but was not included on the CD version.
A prolific songwriter, Scarborough wrote songs performed by L.T.D., Anita Baker and Earth, Wind & Fire. He co-wrote "Giving You the Best That I Got", which won a Grammy Award in 1988 for Best R&B Song. [1] Scarborough was a cousin of fellow songwriter and producer Gary Taylor. [2] Scarborough died of cancer on July 3, 2003 in Los Angeles. [3]
