Epsom is a town in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, England, about 14 miles (22 kilometres) south of central London.The town is first recorded as Ebesham in the 10th century and its name probably derives from that of a Saxon landowner.
The first town hall in Epsom was a building designed by John Hartchard-Smith in the Italianate style which was completed in 1883; located at the corner of Church Street and Upper High Street, it was built with terracotta facings and featured a prominent Venetian window in the middle of a curved corner frontage.
The Playhouse (as it is locally referred to) is in the south-western end of Epsom town centre, adjoining the Ashley Shopping Centre and car park. It was built as part of the Ashley Centre development in the early 1980s, opening in 1984. It is currently managed by Epsom and Ewell Borough Council.
The parish of Epsom was made a local board district in 1850. [4] Such districts were reconstituted as urban districts in 1894. [5] The urban district was enlarged in 1933 to take in the parishes of Ewell and Cuddington, and the following year the district's name was changed to "Epsom and Ewell". [6]

The railway first reached the town in 1847 when an extension of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) from West Croydon was opened with a terminus in the former Station Road (now Upper High Street).
