Shell Beach, located on the Atlantic coast of Guyana in the Barima-Waini Region, near the Venezuelan border, is a nesting site for four of the eight sea turtle species - the Green, Hawksbill turtle, Leatherback and the Olive Ridley. [2] Shell Beach extends for approximately 120 km. [3]
There are several protected areas of Guyana. The oldest protected area is the Kaieteur National Park which covers 627 square kilometres (242 sq mi). [ 1 ] In 2011, the National Protected Areas System (NPAS) was established. [ 2 ]

Barima-Waini is a heavily forested region. The Atlantic coastal strip of Region One features a number of beaches, including, from west to east, Almond Beach, Luri Beach, Shell Beach, Turtle Beach, Foxes Beach, Iron-punt Beach, Pawpaw Beach and Father's Beach. Marine turtles nest on some of these beaches.
