FlightGear started as an online proposal in 1996 by David Murr, living in the United States. He was dissatisfied with proprietary, available, simulators like the Microsoft Flight Simulator, citing motivations of companies not aligning with the simulators' players ("simmers"), and proposed a new flight simulator developed by volunteers over the Internet.

Created by Xavier Tassin, GeoFS was launched as GEFS-Online (Google Earth Flight Simulator) version 0.1 using a Google Earth plug-in on October 1 2010, and before that, Xavier had made another game which become to predecessor, known as the Keynoise Sportstar Flight Simulator, which featured one plane, known as the Evektor Sportstar, which is still available in GeoFS to this day.
