Gospel reggae is a genre of music that originated in Jamaica, mixing reggae rhythms with Christian-themed lyrics. Several reggae artists, many of whom were previously part of the Rastafari movement , have converted to Christianity and adopted gospel reggae as their primary style.
Christafari is a Christian reggae band formed in 1989. It is centered on Christ Jesus and follows the personality of ordained minister Mark Mohr (husband of Avion Blackman} [1] [non-primary source needed] (born October 23, 1971), an American, and born-again Christian.
Rupie Edwards was born in Goshen, in Saint Ann Parish. [1] The family moved to Kingston in 1958, where he sang in talent contests, including those run by Vere Johns. [1] He was spotted by producer S.L. Smith, for whom he recorded his debut single, "Guilty Convict" b/w "Just Because", released on Smith's Hi=Lite label nd licensed to Blue Beat Records in 1962.
In 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Cornerstone Christian University in Orlando, Florida, in recognition of his contribution to gospel reggae music. He was officially inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame on 17 January 2016, by The Jamaica GHF president and Founder Bishop Dr. J.O Baker in Kingston, Jamaica. [7]
In 2020, Gramps Morgan released several solo singles including "Runaway Bay" and "People Like You." The latter was nominated in 2021 for three International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) in the categories of Best Song, Best Crossover Song and Best Gospel Song, and won the award for Best Gospel Song.
She toured as backing singer with Jimmy Cliff in the late 1970s and early 1980s; [1] In 1991, she became a devout Christian and gave up secular music to concentrate on gospel music. [1] [3] After becoming ill in London, she was diagnosed with leukaemia in February 2014. [1] She returned to reggae with performances in Brazil with Lloyd Parks. [4]
Nyabingi music consists of a blend of 19th century gospel music and African drumming. Niyabinghi drumming is not exclusive to the Niyabinghi order, and is common to all Rastafarians. Its rhythms are the basis of reggae music, through the influential ska band, the Skatalites .
