The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) is the medical school of the University of the Incarnate Word, a private Catholic university with its main campus in San Antonio and Alamo Heights, Texas. It was opened in 2015 and received full accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association in 2021. [1]
It offers baccalaureate degrees in 50 academic majors, 37 master's degrees and four doctoral degree programs through eight colleges and the School of Architecture. PVAMU is the largest HBCU in the state of Texas and the third largest HBCU in the United States. PVAMU is a member of the Texas A&M University System and Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
It is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). [1] The UTRGV School of Medicine was established by the Texas Legislature in May 2013. The medical school enrolled its first class of 50 first-year medical students in the fall of 2016. [2]
It was established in 1999 as an independent institution of the Texas A&M University System and received accreditation in December 2002 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, doctoral and professional degrees. The institution and its colleges merged with Texas A&M University on July 12, 2013. [1]
The state has sixteen medical schools, [6] thirteen conventional and three Osteopathic programs. There are ten law schools, [7] which are accredited by the American Bar Association, including Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, Texas Tech University School of Law, and University of Houston Law Center.
Founded as the Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1977, the charter class of 32 students began their medical training on Texas A&M University's campus. 1981 marked the year the first medical degrees were awarded, and since then, more than 2,258 physicians have graduated from Texas A&M School of Medicine.
In July 2015, TCU and the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (UNTHSC) announced their plans to jointly open an allopathic medical school in Fort Worth.
