An ignition coil is used in the ignition system of a spark-ignition engine to transform the battery voltage to the much higher voltages required to operate the spark plug(s). The spark plugs then use this burst of high-voltage electricity to ignite the air-fuel mixture. The ignition coil is constructed of two sets of coils wound around an iron ...
A simple form of partial dual ignition on some amateur-built aircraft uses a single spark plug, but duplicates the coil and pick-up for better redundancy than traditional single ignition. [ 9 ] A further form of partial dual ignition (such as on the Honda VT500 ) is for each cylinder to have a single HT coil which sends the current to one plug ...
A variation coil-on-plug ignition has each coil handle two plugs, on cylinders which are 360 degrees out of phase (and therefore reach top dead center (TDC) at the same time); in the four-cycle engine this means that one plug will be sparking during the end of the exhaust stroke while the other fires at the usual time, a so-called "wasted spark ...
However, the present trend toward higher performance automobile engines threatens to render this tried and true system obsolete. The principal limitation of the Kettering system is, as typically applied, the inability to develop adequate levels of spark plug gap energy without sacrificing longevity of the ignition points or the transformer coil.
A fourth problem can arise when one or more of an engine's spark plugs becomes "fouled." Fouling, caused by combustion-byproducts that form deposits on a spark plug's internal insulator, creates an electrically conductive path that dissipates the coil's energy before its secondary voltage can rise high enough to produce a spark.
This system worked like all Kettering (points/coil) ignition systems: the opening points trigger the collapse of the magnetic field in the ignition coil, producing a high voltage pulse which flows through the spark plug wire to the spark plug. Some electronic ignition systems exist that are not CDI.
