The BMW 8 Series is a range of grand tourer coupes and convertibles produced by BMW. The 8 Series was introduced in 1990 under the E31 model code and was only available as a two-door coupé . [ 1 ] It is powered by a range of naturally aspirated V8 and V12 petrol engines . [ 2 ]
From 1976 to 1986, various models using a 3.2 litre version of the M30 engine were named 533i, 633i, etc. Similarly, from 1987 to 1992, the models using a 3.4 litre version of the M30 engine were named 535i, 635i, etc. The 1982 to 1987 models using a 2.7 litre version of the M20 were called the 325e and 525e (528e in the United States).
Initial models for the convertible include the M850i xDrive and 840d xDrive. The convertible weighs an additional 100 kg (220 lb) more than the coupé. [9] Sales of the 8 Series commenced in November 2018. [10] The high-performance variant BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupé was later introduced in June 2019 at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. [11] [12]

The BMW E31 is the first generation of the BMW 8 Series.It is a grand tourer built by BMW from 1990 to 1999 as a 2-door coupé, powered by either a V8 or V12 engine. Whilst it did supplant the original E24 based 6 Series in 1990, it was not a direct successor, but a new model class with a substantially higher price and performance than the 6 Series.
