The 2023 AFC Asian Cup was the 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial international football tournament organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). It involved 24 national teams after its expansion in 2019 , with hosts Qatar the defending champions.
This was the first AFC Asian Cup meeting between the two nations since 2015, where Iran defeated Qatar 1–0 to eliminate Qatar from the tournament. The two's most recent meeting in other competitive fixtures occurred during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification , which also ended with Iran winning 2–0 and 1–0.
