Created by Wheeler Dam along the Tennessee River, it stretches 60 miles (97 km) from Wheeler Dam to Guntersville Dam. It is Alabama's second largest lake at 68,300 acres (276 km 2), only a few hundred acres smaller than Alabama's Guntersville Lake, which is 69,100 acres (280 km 2) and is separated by the Guntersville dam from the lake.
The river begins as two individual streams. The West Branch of the DuPage River, 35.0 miles (56.3 km) long, [2] starts at Campanelli Park in Schaumburg [4] within Cook County and continues southward through the entire county of DuPage, including the towns of Bartlett, Wayne, Wheaton, Warrenville, Winfield and Naperville (including through its riverwalk), as well as McDowell Grove.
The dam impounds the Guntersville Lake of 67,900 acres (27,500 ha), and its tailwaters feed into Wheeler Lake. Guntersville Dam is named for the city of Guntersville, Alabama, which is located about 10 miles (16 km) upstream. [2] The city is named for its first settler, John Gunter (d. 1836), who arrived in the late 18th century. [3]

Busse Lake. Flood control dams were constructed along the creek in 1978 within the Ned Brown Forest Preserve near Elk Grove Village, Illinois, creating the 590-acre (2.4 km 2) Busse Lake. A diversion tunnel was constructed approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) north of the confluence with the Des Plaines River, at a point where the two streams are ...
Only a few miles below Elk River Dam is the beginning of slack water (Tims Ford Lake) caused by the Tims Ford Dam of the Tennessee Valley Authority. The slack water extends upstream to the vicinity of Estill Springs. It is then bridged by U.S. Route 41A.
