Charles E. Wheeler Wildlife Management Area is a 625-acre (253 ha) brackish tidal marsh, nature preserve and hunting area owned by the state of Connecticut located in Devon (village), Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut. [1] [2] The Charles E. Wheeler WMA is located on the eastern shore (Milford side) of the mouth of the Housatonic River.
Created by Wheeler Dam along the Tennessee River, it stretches 60 miles (97 km) from Wheeler Dam to Guntersville Dam. It is Alabama's second largest lake at 68,300 acres (276 km 2), only a few hundred acres smaller than Alabama's Guntersville Lake, which is 69,100 acres (280 km 2) and is separated by the Guntersville dam from the lake.
The lake has average and maximum depths of 56 feet (17 m) and 163 feet (50 m), respectively. There are three public boat launch locations, [1] and ice fishing is permitted from January through March. [1] Outflow of the lake into the Connecticut River is controlled via the First Lake Dam, [1] located near U.S. Route 3 at the southwestern shore.
Lake Washinee is about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) long, and under a quarter mile (0.4 km) wide of except for its squarish roughly 0.5 by 0.6 mile (0.8 by 1.0 km) southernmost section. Its deepest part is around 21 feet (6.4 m). Lake Washining is much rounder, and roughly 0.9 by 1.3 miles (1.5 by 2 km). It has a maximum depth of 80 feet (24 m).
Lake Saltonstall (Lonotonoquet in Quinnipiac), [2] is a long narrow lake located in south-central Connecticut. It covers an area of approximately 0.66 square miles (1.7 km 2) and is nestled in the center of the trap rock Saltonstall Mountain. The lake is surrounded by forest and serves as part of the local water supply for surrounding towns.
Squantz Pond is a 288-acre lake in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It is located on the town line of Sherman and New Fairfield , and is bordered by manmade Candlewood Lake . [ 1 ] The south shore is protected as Squantz Pond State Park (established in 1926), and is managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection . [ 2 ]
