The Harptones are an American doo-wop group which formed in Manhattan, New York in 1953.. The group never had a top forty pop hit, or a record on the US Billboard R&B chart, [1] yet they are known for both their lead singer Willie Winfield and their pianist/arranger, Raoul Cita.
In 1947, she reached the music charts for the first time with the song "A Sunday Kind of Love" written by her manager, Barbara Belle. [2] She began a solo career in 1948 when she signed a contract with RCA Victor. [3] She had a hit record with "I Said My Pajamas (and Put On My Pray'rs)", a duet with Tony Martin which reached No. 3 on the charts.
The album included the future classics "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "A Sunday Kind of Love". In early 1961, James released what was to become her signature song, "At Last", a Glenn Miller tune, which reached number two on the R&B chart and number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100.
A remake of an old jazz vocal standard made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, "Sunday Kind of Love" reached the #5 spot. Also covered was "Respect," a song made famous by Aretha Franklin . The album debuted at #20 for the week of May 21, 1988, on the Country Albums chart, and peaked at #1 for the week of June 11, 1988.
