Originally marketed by YMCA as a cheap residence for young, single men, the hotel began marketing to a wider clientele when the Great Depression created a demand for inexpensive lodging. The hotel's status and customers declined with the surrounding neighborhood, and it closed in 1979; it reopened as an apartment building in 1985. [ 2 ]
The Fort Dearborn Hotel is a skyscraper and former hotel located at 401 S. Lasalle St. in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. The 17-story hotel was designed by Holabird & Roche and finished in 1914. Designed in the Venetian Renaissance style, the hotel was built with gray and reddish brown brick and featured terra cotta ornamentation.

[4] When the Allerton Hotel first opened, it had fourteen floors of small apartment-style rooms for men and six similar floors for women, with a total of 1,000 rooms. The hotel also boasted social events, gold, sports leagues, a library, solarium, and an in-house magazine. [5]
