Atom Heart Mother is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd. It was released by Harvest on 2 October 1970 in the United Kingdom, and on 10 October 1970 in the United States. [ 3 ]
"Atom Heart Mother" is a six-part suite by the progressive rock band Pink Floyd, composed by all members of the band and Ron Geesin. In October 1970, Pink Floyd released Atom Heart Mother. [99] [nb 20] An early version premièred in England in January, but disagreements over the mix prompted the hiring of Ron Geesin to work out the sound problems. Geesin worked to improve the score, but with little creative input from the band, production was troublesome.
Both appear on Pink Floyd's second album, A Saucerful of Secrets, [10] the first of several to feature cover artwork by Hipgnosis. [11] In 1969, Pink Floyd released a soundtrack album, More, and a combined live and studio album, Ummagumma. [12] Atom Heart Mother (1970) was a collaboration with Ron Geesin, featuring an orchestra and choir. [13]
Because Deusner enjoyed "If" and "Fat Old Sun", he was disappointed Pink Floyd ended Atom Heart Mother with this track. [10] In another review for the Atom Heart Mother album, Irving Tan of Sputnikmusic described the track as an 'incredibly effective form of "wallpaper music'". [11]
For these performances, "If" was expanded with additional lyrics and chord sequences. The song was later played by Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2024 in a medley with Atom Heart Mother. [7]
Atom Heart Mother is, consequently, unrepresented on Echoes. [13] "Fat Old Sun" is perhaps best described as a pastoral, [14] a hymn of praise to the countryside (as were several early Pink Floyd songs, such as "Grantchester Meadows" [15] from Ummagumma and "Green Is the Colour" from More).
In 2008, "Atom Heart Mother" was recreated live on stage at the Cadogan Hall, Chelsea, London, featuring brass, choir, cello, and Italian Pink Floyd tribute band Mun Floyd. The track was presented alongside a Geesin solo performance; "Atom Heart Mother" itself was extended to 35 minutes, developing the cello solos and taking in a section ...
