The Japan Self-Defense Force Base Djibouti (Japanese: ジブチ共和国における自衛隊拠点, Hepburn: Jibuchi Kyouwakoku ni okeru Jieitai Kyoten) is a military base operated by the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) located in Ambouli, Djibouti alongside the Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport.
On 27 June 1977, Japan recognized Djibouti as a sovereign state. [2] Diplomatic ties between Djibouti and Japan were established in 1978. [3] Around a decade later, in 1989, the Djiboutian government established an embassy in Tokyo. [1] The Japanese government, on the other hand, established an embassy in Djibouti City in 2009. [1]
The base was leased by Djibouti to the United States in 2002, along with the right to use the neighboring airport and port facilities. The base supports Operation Enduring Freedom – Horn of Africa (OEF-HOA) and is the centerpiece of a network of around six U.S. drone and surveillance bases stretching across the continent.
