A cedilla (/ s ɪ ˈ d ɪ l ə / sih-DIH-lə; from Spanish cedilla, "small ceda", i.e. small "z"), or cedille (from French cédille, pronounced), is a hook or tail (¸) added under certain letters (as a diacritical mark) to indicate that their pronunciation is modified.
The accent mark in Spanish has an important function: it marks the stressed or "accented" syllable in a word. It is also used to distinguish homonyns, such as Spanish: si (if) and Spanish: sí (yes). The use of accent marks in Spanish, except for capital letters, is not optional. They follow rules.
If you use one accent (except the tilde—strictly, a diacritical sign), use all: émigré, mêlée, protégé, résumé. Put the accents and cedillas on French names and words, umlauts on German ones, accents and tildes on Spanish ones, and accents, cedillas and tildes on Portuguese ones: Françoise de Panafieu, Wolfgang Schäuble, Federico Peña.
