Art therapy is a distinct discipline that incorporates creative methods of expression through visual art media. Art therapy, as a creative arts therapy profession, originated in the fields of art and psychotherapy and may vary in definition. Art therapy encourages creative expression through painting, drawing, or modelling.
The article introduced the framework and exposed readers to concepts and terminology that were unfamiliar in art therapy at the time. The two presented the Expressive Therapies Continuum to their peers at the 1978 annual conference of the American Art Therapy Association, but the foreign-sounding ideas did not resonate with attendees. Anderson and Landgarten presented their findings in Columbus, Ohio at the fifth annual AATA Conference, and publications of the results were also included in the Bulletin of Art Therapy and Studies in Art Education. [2] In 1977, she took part in the seventh annual AATA conference, and sat on a panel titled Art therapy: An exploration of values. [2]
