The original company that made Johnson inboard motors and outboard motors was the Johnson Brothers Motor Company of Terre Haute, Indiana, United States. Ole Evinrude formed Evinrude Outboard Motors, which he sold in 1913 in order to look after his sick wife. In 1919, Evinrude invented a more efficient and lighter two-cylinder motor. Having sold his part in Clemick & Evinrude, he founded ELTO or the Elto Outboard Motor Company. (ELTO was an acronym for "Evinrude Light Twin Outboard".)
Among the earliest representatives of the technology was the OMC Zephyr Saildrive, produced from 1977 to 1984. This was a two-stroke gasoline engine to which oil needed to be added on a 50:1 mixture. It was a derated version of the 32 cubic inch engine block used at that time on the OMC Evinrude 25/30/35 hp outboards.
