The Lego Speed Champions theme was launched on 1 March 2015. The Lego Group announced a partnership with Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, and Porsche. As part of the marketing campaign, The Lego Group released six sets based on racing cars.
The title is the first Lego racing game since the Lego Speed Champions DLC for Forza Horizon 4 in 2019. Lego 2K Drive marked the beginning of a multi-game deal between The Lego Group and 2K. Development of the game took about five years. According to the team, the game was intended to be a casual and approachable experience.
The set consists of 1432 pieces.
