A copper indium gallium selenide solar cell (or CIGS cell, sometimes CI(G)S or CIS cell) is a thin-film solar cell used to convert sunlight into electric power. It is manufactured by depositing a thin layer of copper indium gallium selenide solid solution on glass or plastic backing, along with electrodes on the front and back to collect current.
Cadmium telluride PV is the only thin film technology with lower costs than conventional solar cells made of crystalline silicon in multi-kilowatt systems. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] On a lifecycle basis, CdTe PV has the smallest carbon footprint , lowest water use and shortest energy payback time of any current photovoltaic technology.
CdTe is used to make thin film solar cells, accounting for about 8% of all solar cells installed in 2011. [4] They are among the lowest-cost types of solar cell, [5] although a comparison of total installed cost depends on installation size and many other factors, and has changed rapidly from year to year.

Solyndra rolled its CIGS thin films into a cylindrical shape and placed 40 of them in each 1-by-2-metre (3 ft 3 in by 6 ft 7 in) panel. Solyndra designers thought the cylindrical solar panels absorbed energy from any direction (direct, indirect, and reflected light). [40] Each Solyndra cylinder, one inch in diameter, is made up of two tubes.
