Tradescantia virginiana, the Virginia spiderwort, [2] is a species of flowering plant in the family Commelinaceae (the spiderwort family). It is the type species of the genus Tradescantia, native to the eastern United States. Common names include Virginia spiderwort, common spiderwort, lady’s tears, and spider lily.
Tradescantia (/ ˌ t r æ d ə ˈ s k æ n t i ə / [4]) is a genus of 85 species [5] of herbaceous perennial wildflowers in the family Commelinaceae, native to the Americas from southern Canada to northern Argentina, including the West Indies.
The Tradescantieae are a tribe of plants in the family Commelinaceae erected by Carl Meissner in 1842. [1] Many genera originate from the Americas, but those in subtribes Coleotrypinae, Cyanotinae, Palisotinae and Streptoliriinae are Asian or African in origin; several species in the typical Tradescantia and other genera have become domesticated ornamental plants and naturalised elsewhere.
