Augustana Academy was an educational institution in Canton, South Dakota. The Norwegian Augustana Synod was established in 1870. In that year, the Synod began an academy called the Marshall Academy in Marshall, Wisconsin. In 1881, the academy was moved to Beloit, Iowa, and renamed to Augustana Seminary and Academy.
Merle Antony Tuve was born in Canton, South Dakota. [4] He and physicist Ernest Lawrence were childhood friends. All four of his grandparents were born in Norway and subsequently immigrated to the United States. His father, Anthony G. Tuve, was president of Augustana College and his mother, Ida Marie Larsen Tuve, taught music there.
In 1926, "and Normal School" was dropped from the name and the Canton site eventually became Augustana Academy. [1] Despite the similarities in name, the academy was no longer affiliated with the college, and closed in 1971. [1] The 2010–11 academic year marked Augustana University's sesquicentennial. [10]
