It shouldn't have to be a struggle to find public hunting areas and information on hunting, so hopefully we can keep spreading the word. Joe Hulburt: I'll echo 1_pointer in that archery season is the best way to hunt with lower pressure from others, though even then you need to get away from the major population centers.

Is there anyone from Illinois (I’m located in the North, 40mins from Illinois/Wisconsin border) that plans to get out deer hunting. I’m new to hunting, so would be really interested to tag along on scouting days and pick your brains and maybe tag along for the Hunt day too. Would just want to be an extra set of eyes who has their ears open.

I'd prefer about the second week of October because of that. Could be a tough hunt on public land without any scouting missions before hand. Also that time of year keep an eye out for rattlesnakes and copperheads they will be out and about. Hunting the western part of the state will be totally different than the eastern part. Welcome to HT.

Southern Missouri has smaller deer, and a lot of country to get lost in, but there is a boatload of public land. Good chance at a turkey, too. Northern Missouri has limited public land, lots of agriculture, and some big deer mixed in. Eastern Missouri normally has more people, as well. Stay away from the major cities to find lower pressure.

Personally, experience has taught me that SPOT & STOCK hunting is about the only way of filling my tag on public land. They say, "Elk are where you find them." In my experience, this also holds true to deer hunting when a hundred hunters are chasing the same buck. "Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome" is the name of the game when public hunting.

Hope you had better luck today. I struck out yesterday on public in West Central Illinois. Heard a few gobbles at first light but they shutdown by 7am and didn’t hear a bird after 8am. Logged a few miles walking around but no luck. By mid morning it basically turned into scouting for deer hunting this fall.

All the mountains east of hueco are state land. Get some paper maps and use something like OnX or Western Hunting maps. Public land is sprinkled through the area. Stay off military land and private and you should be fine. Dove and rabbit are mostly what you'll see. Mulies are around during years of good rain, but I stopped hunting them here.

The regulations controlling public use of state lands are simple:
