This is the longest vehicular tunnel entirely within Georgia and has a length of 1,722 m (1.070 mi). While the majority of the S1 highway is a two-lane road, major parts have been rebuilt since 2006 as 2x2 motorway / expressway , specifically Tbilisi to Surami (105 km (65 mi)) and Zestaponi (Argveta) to Samtredia (57 km (35 mi)).
The Bucegi Mountains area, whereof exist references since the 15th century, has been proposed for protection in 1936, due to peerless landscapes and great diversity of plant and animal species. This proposal was taken up only in 1990, when materialized through the Minister's order no. 7/1990.
The road reaches its highest point of 2,112 m (6,929 ft) above sea level at the southern portal of the Roki Tunnel, which opened in 1984. The tunnel is shared with Russia and was the longest within the Soviet Union upon its commissioning with a length of 3,730 m (2.32 mi). It is still the longest tunnel (partially) in Georgia.

Eysturoy Tunnel, which opened in 2020, took four years to complete. It dramatically cut the travel time between the Faroe Islands capital on the island of Streymoy and neighboring Eysturoy island.
The tunnel, completed by the Soviet government in 1984, is one of only a handful of routes that cross the North Caucasus Range. It is at about 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) altitude and its length is 3,730 metres (12,240 ft), and near the Roki Pass at about 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) altitude, which can only be used in summer.
The passage through the mountain reduces a major climb and descent of 400 metres (1,300 ft) from the route. Apart from the long tunnel, the bypass will feature 4 smaller tunnels and 6 bridges, including a 426 metres (1,398 ft) landmark arch bridge and a height of 176 metres (577 ft) spanning the Khada Valley and Khadistskali river.
