I have a BLR in .308 that I use for whitetail hunting. The trigger is stiff however, most of my shots on deer happen fast. Situations where I feel a stiffer trigger is better. A BLR is not a great rifle for long supported shots but it is a great rifle for hunting in the woods. My BLR is paired with a quality fixed power 4x scope.
A BLR in 308 was my first rifle. My grandpa took me to a gun show when I was 11 and I saw a BLR on one of the tables. I mowed lawns all summer so I could buy one before hunting season came that year. It's surprisingly accurate for a lever gun. MOA or better with handloads.
My original planning was to go with a Browning BAR MK3 DBM in .308WIN. But in some outdoor magazine, I read that the reasonable range is just around 200-220 yards and it is about 2MOA accurate on 100 yards. That is not what I was expecting. I could imagine that a M1A is in that area but a Browning, that is really disappointing.
Good evening all. I'd like to hear some opinions/experience/feedback around preferred backcountry lever deer rifle between the Browning BLR and Marlin 336. I would primarily be hunting the big woods of Ontario, Adirondacks, etc. Some of those hunts would feature overnight backcountry stays...
I think the Browning is slightly better quality. If you plan on replacing the trigger, it beats both hands down. The trigger is the only complaint I have about the browning. I shoot .5 MOA groups with handloads in mine. I have a tikka that I like alot as well, and I have owned Savage in the past, but sold them all if that tells you anything.
I just bought a new scope for my 243 and decided to sight it in with Brownings new BXR rounds! This past week, I took my buddy out and got him his first Blacktail with a rifle. He shot the deer with my rifle using the BXR rounds. I can't say enough, at how well the round preformed. The damage...
Lots of very good information on this forum about hunting big game with the 7mm-08. My wife has taken elk and whitetails with hers in the Browning X bolt Micro. 140 gr. Federal Premium Nosler Partitions.
The Barnes VOR-TX 308 Winchester 150 Grain TTSX polymer tipped spitzer boat tail (lead-free) is a round that my .308 really likes. I called Barnes for their load data to replicate it, but their load information is proprietary. Because i've had such great performance with it out of my rifle...
Very simple. I installed posts on both my BLRs. Browning supports gunsmith installation just to cover their own butt liabilitu wise just in case you were to mess it up. Just take it slow, make sure it's straight. If you have done it before, you can do it on the BLR. Slipping and hard initial penetration is the only problem the high gloss ...
I always wanted a takedown blr in 308 but have yet to get my hands on one. About the only complaint I have heard was the trigger. Same reason I have yet to seek a Remington 760 in 35 whelen. I've shot a few of the blr and none of them had great triggers. Nothing uncontrollable but you had to make a good pull to get them to shoot well.
