Affandi (18 May 1907 – 23 May 1990) was an Indonesian artist. Born in Cirebon, West Java, as the son of R. Koesoema, who was a surveyor at a local sugar factory, Affandi finished his upper secondary school in Jakarta. He gave up his studies to pursue his desire to become an artist. Beginning in 1934, Affandi began teaching himself how to paint.
'Musiyum Affandi') is a museum located in Yogyakarta on Java, Indonesia. On the bank of the Gajah Wong River on Laksda Adisucipto Street number 167, in 1953 the painter Affandi designed and constructed a home for himself which also functions as a museum to display his paintings, inaugurated on 15 December 1973.
Kartika Affandi was born in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (present-day Jakarta, Indonesia) in 1934, the only child of artists Affandi and Maryati. [1] Kartika in 1952 married R.M. Saptohoedojo, a painter. [2]
The development of Indonesian painting works was strongly influenced by historical forces. Indonesian painting only developed after the era of Islamic painting. Painting at this time experienced a very rapid development along with the development of Indonesian art in which figures such as Raden Saleh, Affandi, Basuki Abdullah and others.
Today the museum houses 1770 artworks by Indonesian and foreign artists, among the most notable are Indonesian artists Raden Saleh, Affandi, Basuki Abdullah, and also some foreign artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Hans Hartung, Victor Vasarely, Sonia Delaunay, Pierre Soulages, and Zao Wou Ki.
